Morning Sickness Got You Down? Simple, Science-Backed Ways to Feel Better
Nurturing KoshaShare
You wake up queasy. The smell of tea makes your stomach turn. And somehow "morning" sickness lasts all day.
You're not alone. Up to 80% of pregnant women feel nausea in early pregnancy. For most, it starts around week 6, peaks near week 9, and eases by week 14 to 16. Until then, here's what research says can help.
What Helps
- Ginger. This is the most studied natural remedy for pregnancy nausea. Several reviews found it works better than a placebo. Try ginger tea, a small piece of fresh ginger, or ginger candy. Studies used about 1 gram a day, split across the day.
- Eat small, eat often. An empty stomach makes nausea worse. Keep crackers or a few nuts by your bed and eat a little before you get up.
- Add some protein. One study found protein-rich snacks eased nausea better than carb-only snacks. Think paneer, curd, peanut chikki, or a boiled egg.
- Choose cold foods. Cold food smells less, so it's easier to eat. Curd rice, fruit, or chilled buttermilk may go down better than a hot meal.
- Sniff a lemon. A small trial found that smelling lemon helped reduce nausea. Keep a cut lemon or lemon peel close by.
- Try wrist pressure. Pressing the P6 point, three fingers below your wrist crease, helps some women. The evidence is mixed, but it's safe to try.
- Rest. Being tired makes nausea worse. Nap when you can.
What to Avoid
- Going long without food. Don't skip meals, even on bad days.
- Greasy, fried, or very spicy food. It's harder to digest and often sets off nausea.
- Strong smells. Open a window. Stay away from the kitchen when tadka is going.
- Gulping water with meals. Sip fluids between meals instead. This keeps your stomach from feeling too full.
- Lying flat after eating. Stay upright for at least 30 minutes.
- Taking your iron tablet on an empty stomach. Iron can make nausea worse. Ask your doctor if you can take it at a different time.
When to Call Your Doctor
Call your doctor if you can't keep fluids down for a day, feel dizzy, have dark urine, or are losing weight. This could be hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness that needs medical care.
Be gentle with yourself. This phase is hard, and it does pass.
