Pregnancy brain: why you're suddenly so forgetful (and what actually helps)

Vishakha Gupta

You are forgetting things. Leaving the gas on in the kitchen. Forgetting your thoughts mid-sentence. You have absolutely no idea why. Third time today.

Yes, pregnancy brain is real. Not an excuse, and not a joke your colleagues get to make. Researchers who scanned women before and after pregnancy found genuine changes in brain structure, and most women report memory slips and fuzzy focus, especially in the second and third trimester. Your brain is not breaking. It is reorganising.

So what is actually going on up there?

A few things at once.

Hormones. Progesterone and estrogen are at levels you have never lived with before. They touch mood, sleep and memory.

Sleep. You are up at 2am for the bathroom, then heartburn, then a leg cramp. Broken sleep alone can wreck short term memory.

Bandwidth. You are running a full time job, a household, a list of scan appointments and a growing human. Something has to give, and usually it is remembering where you kept your phone.

The part nobody tells you

Those brain changes are not damage. The current thinking is that your brain is pruning, getting more efficient at the things that are about to matter: reading tiny facial cues, tuning into sound, tracking risk. You may forget a colleague's name in a meeting. You will also notice your baby's breathing change from across the room.

A trade, not a loss.

What actually helps

  • Outsource your memory. One notes app, one list, everything goes in it. Stop trying to hold it all in your head. That is not a personal failing, that is smart.
  • Protect the sleep you can get. Left lateral position, a pillow between the knees, dinner two hours before bed. Even one extra unbroken hour helps more than you would expect.
  • Eat properly, and often. Long gaps drop your blood sugar and the fog gets thicker. Keep something at your desk.
  • One thing at a time. Multitasking was never great for anyone. Right now it is just noise.
  • Give your brain something playful. Puzzles, crosswords, doodling. Low stakes, screen free, and genuinely good for focus.

That last one is why we made the "The Ultimate Brain Activity Combo", 100 plus activities including bilateral brain coordination exercises, puzzles, math problems and so much more built for exactly this phase, when you want your mind engaged meaningfully, skipping the scrolling at midnight. And if it worries you

Occasional forgetfulness is normal. If it comes with a heavy low mood, no interest in anything, or a feeling that you are not coping, that deserves a conversation with your doctor. That is not pregnancy brain, and it is something that can be helped.

So, ghabrao mat. You are not losing your mind. You are just running a lot of programs at once, on very little sleep.

Talking about this with women at the same stage helps more than any tip on a list. Join the Nurturing Kosha WhatsApp community and find out how many of us walked into a room today and completely forgot why.
